Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is set to visit Hamilton on Monday morning to make a housing announcement.

Trudeau’s itinerary says he will visit a housing construction site and meet with workers before making an announcement and taking questions from media.

Housing and a growing number of encampments has been a prime issue in the city since long before Mayor Andrea Horwath was elected late last year.

She recently asked the federal government for roughly $9 million to address an “alarming rise” of refugee and asylum seekers ending up in the shelter system or living on the streets.

Trudeau met with Horwath on Jan. 24 to speak about numerous issues, including housing and homelessness.

A press release from Trudeau at the time said they “emphasized the importance of building affordable housing along the Light Rail Transit corridor.”

Jagmeet Singh, leader of the federal New Democratic Party, visited Hamilton on July 18 to host a roundtable on rent.

He also discussed refugee and asylum seekers facing homelessness, as well as how some renters are trying to form co-ops and buy the buildings they live in.
