Update on Capital Region’s Indigenous school mascots

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — In November 2022, the New York State Department of Education issued a memorandum, requiring schools with a Native American mascot to find a replacement by the end of the 2022-2023 school year. The change would apply to mascots, team names, and logos.

In April, the Board of Regents officially approved the mandate. Over 100 schools in New York were affected by the ruling.

The latest local district to change its mascot comes from the former South Colonie Raiders, who voted to change to the South Colonie Wolfpack.

Districts to drop mascot name, but yet to pick a new one:

  • Averill Park – dropped “Warriors” mascot
  • Cambridge – dropped “Indians” mascot
  • Mechanicville – dropped “Red Raiders” mascot
  • Mohanasen – dropped “Warriors” mascot
  • Niskayuna – dropped “Silver Warriors” mascot
  • Stillwater – dropped “Warriors” mascot

Districts to pick a new mascot, yet to have a new logo:

  • Fonda-Fultonville – switched from “Braves” to “Valley Hawks”
