The US has a large presence in Korea ever since the Korean War. There are about 28,500 American troops stationed in South Korea currently.
On July 27, 1953, the Korean Armistice agreement was signed, which ended hostilities and created a Demilitarized Zone along the 38th parallel.
Following the armistice, South Korea and the US then signed a Mutual Defense Treaty, which supports the alliance between the two countries.
Tensions on the Korean Peninsula have remained high between North and South, though they have cooled in recent years with even then-president Donald Trump making a visit to North Korea.
