Trump rips Republicans for not teaming up to fight ‘radical left Democrats’

Former President Donald Trump criticized the Republican Party Wednesday amid its move to replace House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
“Why is it that Republicans are always fighting among themselves, why aren’t they fighting the Radical Left Democrats who are destroying our country?” he wrote on Truth Social.
A motion to vacate against Mr. McCarthy was filed in the House Monday night by Rep. Matt Gaetz, Florida Republican, after threatening for weeks to do so.
After a vote Tuesday, Mr. McCarthy was ousted from his position as speaker with a 216-210 vote. All House Democrats voted to remove Mr. McCarthy, with eight Republicans joining them.
This marks the first time in history a speaker has been removed. Votes had occurred, but none resulted in removal.
“This represents the ripping off of the Band-Aid, and that’s what we need to get back on track,” Mr. Gaetz said after the vote, adding that Mr. McCarthy’s broken promises on the budget and other issues led to his removal.
Lawmakers will come together next week to elect a new speaker. After the vote, Mr. McCarthy announced he would not run again.
Rep. Patrick McHenry, North Carolina Republican and chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, was assigned to be temporary speaker.
Before the motion to vacate, other Republicans echoed similar statements to that of Mr. Trump.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, Georgia Republican, wrote on X Monday that she agrees with Mr. Gaetz that “things must change,” but that a motion to vacate against Mr. McCarthy will not “effectively create the changes needed” and that it would give “the upper hand to the Democrats.”
Rep. Tom McClintock, California Republican, said in a floor speech ahead of the vote that the House “will be paralyzed” if the motion carried.
“We can expect week after week of fruitless ballots while no other business can be conducted,” he continued. “The Democrats will revel in Republican dysfunction, and the public will rightly be repulsed. It’ll end when the Democrats are able to enlist the rump caucus of Republicans to join a coalition to end the impasse. This House will shift dramatically to the left and will effectively end the Republican House majority that the voters elected in 2022.”
