Ange Postecoglou makes same transfer promise Jurgen Klopp ended up regretting – Footymercato.com

Ange Postecoglou has warned Tottenham will never spend £100m on a player.

Tottenham are chasing the financial jackpot of a place in the Champions League as they also look to close the gap in next season’s title race. But Postecoglou has moved to lower expectations when it comes to transfers even if their fierce rivals Arsenal spent £105m on Declan Rice last summer while Chelsea spent £105 on Enzo Fernandez and £115m on Moises Caicedo.

Tottenham’s record signing remains £54m for Tanguy Ndombele in 2019 who has proved to be a spectacular flop and is currently on loan at Galatasaray who have an option to buy him for £12m. Spurs boss Postecoglou is hugely popular with Tottenham fans but the supporters may be unhappy with his prediction over the club’s spending.

Postecoglou said: “I don’t think we are in a position to spent £100m on a player, if that is what you are suggesting. That is not the case and I don’t think it will ever be the case for the club. Our competitors are, irrespective of the positions.

Pep Guardiola makes major Jurgen Klopp claim ahead of Man City vs Liverpool showdown

“I have always felt with those things it is not what you spend, it is how you spend it. I have always believed that and will continue to believe that.

“It is purely financial. If I had the luxury of £100m, I would rather get two £50m players. Cor that is great isn’t it. Wonderful. The world I have come from!”

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp made a similar stance previously prior to the Reds later agreeing a deal worth more than £100m for Caicedo, who opted to join Chelsea instead.

Postecoglou said: “It could be my background and conservative nature where I have come from. I have never been in that kind of position, I always felt that it is really important how you use the funds you have available. They are not limitless.

“If we can, and somebody tells me we can, then I would gladly spend it. I try and put limits on my wife’s spending and try to put limits on mine.”

Tottenham are pushing for a money-spinning return to the Champions League while the club’s accounts are likely to show a healthy profit after they sold Harry Kane for £86m last summer.

Fans were also annoyed this week to see the club put up season ticket prices by six per cent and also scaled back on concessions for older supporters.
