Kobbie Mainoo offered Roy Keane guidance after breakthrough Liverpool moment – Footymercato.com

Roy Keane reserved special praise for Kobbie Mainoo after his stunning strike in Manchester United’s 2-2 draw against Liverpool on Sunday. But the iconic United midfielder pinpointed an area of the teenage talent’s game that needs improvement after his role in Liverpool’s opener at Old Trafford.

Mainoo curled a sensational effort past Caoimhin Kelleher in the 67th minute to complete a second-half comeback and send the hosts 2-1 ahead.

Bruno Fernandes’ incredible lob levelled the score just five minutes after the break, profiting from a disastrous square ball by Jarell Quansah.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka tripped Harvey Elliott as United conceded a third penalty in two games, and Mohamed Salah struck from the spot. It was the third successive match in which Erik ten Hag’s side surrendered a late lead to drop points.

The Red Devils were left disappointed but ultimately didn’t deserve more than a point after failing to record a single shot in a dominant first half by Liverpool.

Liverpool should have been home and dry but only led 1-0 at the break through Luis Diaz’s 23rd-minute effort, poking home a Darwin Nunez flick-on from a corner.

Mainoo appeared to be marking the winger, who drifted away towards the back post to find himself in acres of space before firing past Andre Onana.

And while Keane praised Mainoo’s goal, he insisted the 18-year-old has a lot to learn and improve, including at set-pieces.

“It’s a tough game for him, obviously he’s done well. It’s a very good Liverpool team. He’s still learning, still not there with the set pieces but he’s doing better,” Keane said on Sky Sports.

“Scored one wonderful goal and it’s just now about how he copes with the expectations he’s had over the last few months with playing for England.”

He added: “[He] Seems like a really nice kid, got lots to learn and he’ll only get better from these experiences,” the former United captain said.

“Scored against Liverpool, I know he’s talking about not winning the game but you can see he’s delighted to have scored, even if it wasn’t the winner.”

Mainoo displayed his standards and mentality in the aftermath by expressing his disappointment despite recording his first goal at Old Trafford in a famous fixture.

“[I’m] Disappointed [with only a point], to be honest, because I feel like in second half we performed really well,” Mainoo explained after full-time.

“We picked it up and the lads worked really, really hard. It was minor mistakes that in the end were major. Need ironing out and we can win the game.”

“Unbelievable feeling [to score his goal], first professional goal at Old Trafford and to do it in this fixture is also amazing. At the end of the day, we don’t walk away with the three points, so I can’t be too happy.”
