Game of the week: AS Monaco v Paris Saint-Germain, Friday 20:00 (UK)
As expected, with the league title all but secured already, PSG are beginning to drop points. Gonçalo Ramos’ late penalty salvaged a point against Rennes. It was a game that will be remembered for Kylian Mbappé’s withdrawal mid-way through the second half. It was a strong statement from Luis Enrique, who showed that Mbappé was no longer untouchable at the club. “Sooner or later, we’ll have to learn to play without Mbappé,” said the Spaniard in his post-match press conference. Whilst the France captain will be expected to start against his formative club on Friday night, there is clearly a changing of the guard and this period of transition towards life without Mbappé could herald a period of inconsistency.
Les Parisiens come up against a chronically inconsistent Monaco side. Les Monégasques are undoubtedly PSG’s bogey team. The latter haven’t won at the Stade Louis II since January 2020, and whilst Monaco’s home form is poor this season (eighth best in Ligue 1), they often save their best performances in the Principality for the big occasions. With defeats to Lyon, Reims and Le Havre at home in recent weeks, Monaco are without a win at the Stade Louis II since 3rd December 2023. Adi Hütter’s side will take confidence from their narrow 3-2 victory over Lens. Les Monégasques have rediscovered their clinical touch in front of goal, even if Folarin Balogun continues to be wasteful from the penalty spot, however, their defence remains an issue and PSG certainly have the personnel to exploit that.
