The first body filler, used by both the OEs and hot rodders alike, was lead. Why do you think they call early customs Lead Sleds? They were full of it as their body mods were all done with the help of lead. It melts at relatively low temps, it is easy to manipulate and shape, and it has the right amount of flexibility to keep from cracking. I’ve only worked with it a couple of times, but I think with some practice it would be a fun skill to use. In the video below, metal shaping master Wray Schelin from the ProShaper’s Workshop shows why lead is used, how to use it, and why you should want to.
The great thing about lead is that it doesn’t require much when it comes to supplies or equipment. And all of the tools and supplies you do need are inexpensive. And unlike a can of Bondo, this stuff will still be good after sitting on the shelf in your shop for 35 years.
