According to Le Parisien, the anticipated departure of Kylian Mbappé (25) looks as if it has opened a future for Xavi Simons (20) at Paris Saint-Germain.
Simons first joined Les Parisiens when he was 16 but struggled to break into the first team and was eventually sold last season to PSV, but with the stipulation that there was a buyback clause that would allow him to return to Paris.
After an impressive season in the Netherlands, PSG triggered that clause but again Simons’ immediate future was to be elsewhere, as the club then allowed him to join RB Leipzig on loan over the summer.
His development has only increased exponentially since joining Leipzig and has highlighted the exceptional talent at hand, with Simons having already scored 9 goals and assisted 8 times during his stay in the Bundesliga.
Leipzig had been hopeful that they could extend his loan by another year, but such has been the depth of his ability combined with the imminent departure of Mbappé at the end of the season, that this has become an increasingly slim possibility.
Filling the Mbappé void
It’s clear that PSG values Simons, as Le Parisien reports, the club president, Nasser Al-Khelaïfi was thought to be personally responsible for bringing the player back to the club last summer. And yet despite this, a lot remains on how PSG approach the upcoming transfer window.
The club have been rumoured with an ever-growing list of players as they seek to fill the approaching Mbappé void, and Simons and his entourage will likely be keenly watching who PSG brings in this summer and how they will impact his place in the squad. It’s not out of the question that Simons may eventually look for a move if he believes that his progress into the first team is once again being held back.
However, even if Simons comes to this decision it appears a permanent move remains out of the question, at least until 2025, as it is rumoured that PSG do not have full financial control of their forward due to the nature of the buyback clause they activated.
It is thought that until then, any sale that the French club make on Simons will line the pockets of PSV instead. And with, Simons increasingly on the radar of the big clubs across Europe, the fee PSG could miss out on, would be astoundingly large.
