Southgate not top Man United target as details emerge – Sources – Footymercato.com

Man United have not put Gareth Southgate at the top of their list of potential Erik ten Hag replacements, sources have told Football Insider.

It is believed Southgate, 53, is among multiple contenders to replace the Dutchman and is well-known by expected new sporting director Dan Ashworth and is admired by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS organisation.

However, well-placed sources have told Football Insider that there are a number of names on the Red Devils’ list above the England boss, who is not particularly high on the pecking order.

United will be reluctant to wait for Southgate to conclude his business with England at the incoming Euros in the summer if they are to make a managerial change.

Southgate has been the boss of the Three Lions since 2016 and has had only one club managerial role – his three-year spell with Middlesbrough between 2006 and 2009.

He guided England to the semi-finals of the World Cup in 2018 and the final of Euro 2020, where he lost to Italy on penalties at Wembley Stadium.

The former Crystal Palace and Aston Villa player has worked with multiple current Man United stars while England boss including Marcus Rashford, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw.

They are next set to face Brentford on 30 March after the international break, where Southgate will face Brazil and Belgium in friendlies.
