Is The Polo Coming Back? Volkswagen Brand Director Reveals Plans

[ad_1]

The Polo hatchback was the car that put the German automotive giant Volkswagen on the map in India. However, back in 2022, the company pulled the plug on this model. Ever since then, enthusiasts have been begging the brand to bring back the Polo to India. Recently, during an interview, Volkswagen India’s brand director Ashish Gupta revealed the future plans for this hatchback. He stated that the Polo will NOT be coming back to India as far as he can see.

Will the Polo make a comeback?

The video interview with Volkswagen India brand director Ashish Gupta has been shared on YouTube by Sunderdeep Singh. In this interview, he asks Gupta if Polo is coming back to India or not. To this, he answered that the Polo won’t be coming to India anytime in the future.

He stated that Volkswagen at the moment has no plans for the Polo badge. Gupta, however, added that like all other enthusiasts, he is also a Polo lover and he is trying his best to bring Polo back. He gave a glimmer of hope that it could come back as an EV or an SUV. But there is no confirmation.

Volkswagen Polo’s discontinuation

As stated above, Volkswagen, after having a strong run of 12 years, discontinued the Polo back in 2022. Before being discontinued, Volkswagen launched the Legend Edition of the Polo. It was priced at Rs. 10.25 lakhs ex-showroom. Only 700 units of the Polo Legend Edition were made.

The Polo was offered with various powertrain options in India over its 12 years in the country. However, just before the discontinuation, it was offered with a 1.0-litre TSI petrol engine that produced 110 PS of max power and 175 Nm of peak torque.

It was offered with a 6-speed manual gearbox or a new 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. There was also a 1.0-litre MPI on offer for people who were on a budget. It produces 75 PS and 95 Nm.

Volkswagen sub-4m SUV

Following the conversation about the Polo, Gupta was then asked about VW’s plan for a sub-4m SUV. He was asked that as Skoda has announced a sub-4m SUV, is something similar coming from Volkswagen as well.

To this, he replied that at the moment they have no plans for a similar SUV. He then elaborated that their company is positioned as a top-of-volume brand. This means that they operate on the premium end of any segment. Because of this, they won’t be making any budget SUVs or hatchbacks in the near future.

No limited-run cars coming

Towards the end, the interviewer then asks Gupta about plans to bring any SUV or vehicle like the T-Roc. To this, he replied that currently the prices of such high-end vehicles have increased in European markets. So importing any of those models with hefty Indian duties won’t be feasible. For this reason, they won’t be bringing any limited-run CBUs to India. The Volkswagen iD4 EV will be an exception though, as it’s meant to be a showcase of the German automaker’s electric vehicle ambitions.
