Why I did not celebrate my goal vs Akwa United FC – Aniekeme Okon

Remo Stars FC midfielder, Aniekeme Okon has revealed why he did not celebrate after scoring against Akwa United FC. SportsRation exclusively reports.

Aniekeme Okon came-on as a substitute for the Stars in the Nigeria Premier Football League week-nine fixture at Eket Stadium on Sunday, November 19.

The former Flying Eagles of Nigeria midfielder, was at the right-place at the right-time to head home for 3-2 and set-up a tensed closing period Vs his hometown club.

Recall that Aniekeme Okon had played for of all-three government owned male teams in Akwa Ibom State before a brief spell at Turkish side ALtay, Kano PillarsFC and now plies his trade with Remo Stars Sports Club of Ikenne.

After learning the basics of the game at Greater Tomorrow Sports Academy, Aniekeme joined Ibom Youths FC as one of the founding players in the Nationwide League.

Then Akwa Startlet FC [now Dakkada FC] then took the skillful midfielder into their ranks. His outstanding displays in the Nigeria National League will catch the attention of Akwa United FC who handed him his big-break.

In an exclusive chat with SPORTSRATION correspondent, Nsikakabasi Akpan, after the game, Aniekeme said refusing to celebrate was a mark of respect, reason he raised his hands in the air as he raced back for the restart.

” Scoring a goal is a boast for both the player and the team. But my goal on Sunday happened to be against my former club [Akwa United FC]. If I celebrated it would have been disrespectful, ” Aniekeme Okon told SPORTSRATION.

The Sky Blues midfielder went further to reveal how grateful he remains for the opportunity given to him many years ago by the Promise Keepers.

He added ” I also refused to celebrate the goal because Akwa United FC made me a respected professional player.

” It was a special day for me but i have huge respect for the players and the club [Akwa United FC], ” the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup star said.

Akwa United FC defeated Remo Stars Sports Club 3-2 in that keenly contested game to send the Sky Blues back to Ikenne without a point to show for their efforts.

Okon is confident the Sky Blues will return to winning ways when they welcome table-topping Doma United FC to their home ground this weekend.

” We will definitely bounce back to winning ways, ” he said ahead of the week-ten fixture.

” We are preparing and working on that already. For us [Remo Stars], the most important thing is getting the three points then think of the next. ” he concluded.
