My tips to winter-proof your home, plus a product that will fix an ‘archnemesis’

A HOME expert has shared her advice for how to winter-proof an older home.
She said she swears by a single product that prevents warm air from escaping.
Laura (@lauradebarra) shared the advice with over 37,000 TikTok followers.
She explained that from experience, she’s noticed tips around keeping heating bills low mostly revolved around modern homes.
“You’re expected to have thermostats on the walls, valves on the radiators, double-glazed windows, etc.,” she said.
For older homes, she explained that the “arch-nemesis” was single-glazed windows.
“Single-glazed windows are the arch-nemesis of anyone who’s renting, can’t make major changes, doesn’t have the budget to make major changes, and still wants a warm home,” she said.
She explained her last home was over 100 years old with single-glazed windows.
Not only that but it was also located on the ground floor, making the spot freezing.
“You would find that the heat we were paying for was just leaving the building,” she said.
Laura swore by glazing kits, which were draft excluders.
“They can be called secondary glazing film… why does this work? All you need to do is you’re basically creating a second glazing effect,” she explained.
Instead of recommending a specific brand, she advised viewers to pay attention to product reviews instead.
“Apply your tape around the pane, pop on the plastic film, and then you’re going to get a hairdryer,” she said.
“Love them, swear by them, they’re one of the cheapest and easiest ways to keep your insulation.”
People took to the comments to thank her for her advice: “Thank you for this, I need these on my sash windows,” said one commenter.
“Such a useful video!! So practical thank you!!” said another.
